Specialty Court Programs

The Kansas City Municipal Court handles various ordinance violations and, through its Specialty Court Programs, offers alternatives to jail. The Specialty Court Programs connect defendants with tools and resources to help them successfully reintegrate into society.

Wellness Court

The Wellness Specialty Court services anyone with a treatment need.

  • An intensive court-supervised treatment program for people exhibit signs of co-occurring disorders (substance use and mental health disorder).
  • Sentencing includes a 4 phase program that requires 6 months of sobriety, stable housing, and stable employment (or the equivalent of), to graduate.
  • Women's Court is a gender-responsive track of Wellness Court, serving women with a history of substance use and trauma – helping them recover, restore, and reclaim their lives.

Resource needs include rental and housing assistance, including back utilities, job/work attire, fees for applications and training, transportation, and medical assistance.

Veterans Court

The City of Kansas City Municipal Court continues its partnership with the Veterans Administration Hospital (VA) to refer veterans who have substance use and/or mental health disorders to treatment as a needed alternative to incarceration.

Resources needed within the Veterans Court include transportation, toiletries and laundry access, incentive items (gifts cards, uber cards, etc.) for completing the treatment program.

Domestic Violence Court

This docket is an intensely supervised probation process. Participants meet regularly with their assigned Offender Accountability Coordinator and appear regularly in front of the judge to monitor progress. Many participants are impacted by behavioral health disorders and are referred to treatment within the community.

The Domestic Violence Specialty Courts include the Compliance Docket, the Domestic Violence Drug Court, and the Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP) docket.

Resource needs within the Domestic Violence Specialty Court include rental assistance and utilities, driver’s license issues, and transportation.

Truancy Court

This docket provides the opportunity for parents to break down any barriers that prevent compliance with the compulsory attendance law and provides resources and support to improve academic performance, break down language barriers, prevent houselessness and domestic abuse.

Most parents charged with truancy violations cannot afford much needed services and therefore referrals of these services are made to various community agencies.

Housing Court

Housing Court addresses property code violations affecting the health, safety and welfare of neighborhoods. Many defendants have financial, educational and emotional obstacles to code compliance.
